Mechanical Handling Specialists

Lawson Engineers specialises in designing mechanical handling solutions to meet specific customer needs. With a good balance of youth and experience our mechanical design team produces designs that are both innovative and robust. In particular we have a great deal of experience in the following areas;

  • Offshore Launch and Recovery Systems (LARS) - for ROV's and various other subsea vehicles and tool systems.
  • Winches - hydraulic, pneumatic and electrically powered.
  • Cranes and Davits.
  • Hydraulic Power Packs.
  • Personnel Lifts and Goods Hoists.

However we are not limited to the above and would be happy to look at any handling requirement - the more unusual the better!

We also have a number of standard designs - particularly for LARS and winches - which are constantly evolving. Our 3000m LARS, for example, has been developed since the early 1990's. Starting life as a 7,500 kg SWL system with direct hydraulic control, it now features a 10.725 kg SWL and is remotely control through a PLC.

3D CAD Design Using SolidWorks ©

Since 1997 Lawson Engineers have been using SolidWorks 3D solid modeling software for mechanical design.

This has given us several advantages over the use of traditional 2D CAD, including;

  • Enhanced visualisation - which helps us to design a better product and makes it easier to communicate design ideas to our customers.
  • Faster product development.
  • Links directly to our FEA software - allowing better and faster design enhancement.
  • Easier management of complex assemblies.

Finite Element Analysis using Algor ©

In addition to more traditional calculation methods, Lawson Engineers use FEA to rapidly analyse large structures and to hone the design of individual components.

Beam element models speed up design development of large structures - such as A-frames - and give accurate loads at specific areas - such as bolted connections - where further analysis is required.

Brick models allow for design optimisation of specific parts - such as the latch shown below.
